The pitch invader who disrupted a World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay carrying a rainbow flag has been released. 

The protester who is known as Mario Ferri wore a T-shirt with 'Save Ukraine' on the front and 'Respect for Iranian woman' on the back. 

He was chased by the stewards as the match stopped before they caught up with him and took him off the field at Lusail Stadium.

According to the Italian foreign ministry, Ferri who is an activist was released by authorities following a brief detention. 

In a statement to AFP, the ministry noted that Ferri would not face any consequences for his actions on Monday, November 28. 

Before the World Cup kick-off, FIFA informed all 32 participating teams that political protests will not be condoned in Qatar. 

FIFA also instructed the teams that the captains will not be allowed to wear the ‘OneLove’ armbands threatening them with sanctions. 

Germany in their opening group fixture against Japan showed their protest to the decision by covering their mouths during the team photo ahead of the kickoff. 

However, in a recent review of the laws, fans could enter the stadiums with rainbow flags. 

Another protest that has been witnessed in the World Cup was when Iran players declined to sing their national anthem before their match with England.
