In one of her posts, Van Vleuten narrated her experiences in the Southern part of Kenya.
“Day 2 Kenya Masai Mara. Privileged to meet Masai people today, especially this young woman who was interesting to talk to.
“We went by gravel bike guided by Verona. Almost forgot to mention that our day started at 6.00 am with a safari, breakfast with a view of a lot of hippos and some Crocs at the Mara river, after we saw lions, leopards and more,” read her statement.
Bikes4Masai is a project that was founded by Spanish pro rider Carlos Verona and her wife Esther Casasola.
The objective of the project was to raise funds to purchase bicycles for young individuals from the Maasai tribe, one of the marginalized tribes in the East African region.
Most of the Maasai children do not have means of transport from home to school.
Therefore, the bicycles were intended to enable them to commute from home to school with ease.
Van Vleuten recently raised about Ksh2.2 million (€17,000) after auctioning her jersey. The proceeds were channeled to the Bikes4Masai charity and Amy Pieters Foundation.
The Amy Pieters Foundation was established to support one of Van Vleuten's teammates who suffered a nasty injury earlier this year.
