Faith Kipyegon Crowned Second Best Athlete in Africa

Kenya’s 1,500m specialist Faith Kipyegon Chepngetich was on Tuesday, December 20, named the second-best female athlete in Africa by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA). 

The 28-year-old middle-distance runner specialising in the 1,500 metres won nearly all the competitive races she graced.

Kipyegon, who is a two-time world champion in 2017 and 2022 as well as two-time world silver medallist in 2015, made the country proud when she won a world championships title and Diamond League trophy in the just concluded athletic season.

The mother of one clocked at 3:52.96 to win a gold medal for Kenya in the World Athletics Championships which was held in Eugene, United States. 

According to the CAA, Nigerian sprinter Tobi Amusan was the best female runner in the continent by far, thanks to the marvelous performances she registered for this season.

Amusan entered the history book during the World Athletics Championships when she became the first-ever Nigerian to win a track event at the event. 

The 25-year-old broke the 100m hurdles record twice in a single day in Eugene. She clocked 12:12 seconds in the semifinals before improving her time to 12:06 in the finals.

Amusan added another gold medal to her cabinet at the Commonwealth Games staged in Birmingham, United Kingdom in August.

At the Diamond League series, the Ijebu Ode-born speedster was also unstoppable. 

Amusan lowered the 22-year-old meeting record set by American international Gail Devers when she crossed the finishing line in 12.29 seconds at the final held in Zurich, Switzerland.

Ethiopia’s long-distance runner and holder of a number of worlds records Letesenbet Gidey was ranked third.
