Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) officials met with Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba to brief him on the status of the sports and the players' welfare.

Led by KRU chairperson Geoffrey Oduor, the federation officials met the CS at his office on Thursday, January 12, 2023.

The team was also accompanied by the World Rugby High-Performance Consultant for Africa, Stephen Nel.

Namwamba highlighted that the only way to build a game of world-class rugby, the federation to prioritize players' welfare and put more focus on player development.

"As a union, you must put more emphasis on development programs for us to return to the top of world Rugby standings.

"To do so, player welfare must remain a priority for the union. The union should honour the contractual obligations entered between itself and our players," Namwamba commented.

In November 2021, Shujaa players came out to ask for monetary help from well-wishers complaining over unpaid salaries for three months.

However, in a recent communication by the players, it was disclosed that they raised Ksh600,224.

Namwamba compared the players to geese that lay eggs, noting that they deserved better treatment.

CS Namwamba asked KRU to observe the values of integrity and transparency in the management of rugby affairs.

He assured the federation of government support if there will be proper management of resources allocated.

"The government will continue to support all our sporting federations, but we expect to see prudent management of resources allocated to every federation," Namwamba noted.
