Sports Cabinet Secretary Abbau Namwamba warned WRC Safari Rally officials over embezzlement of funds.

Addressing the issue of reports that indicated staff were not paid, Namwamba faulted officials for lacking accountability.

The CS disclosed that he had called for a special audit report on projects under the WRC Safari Rally.

“We cannot be spending Ksh2.6 billion on a rally, and you do not see the value for money. It is shameful that you give Ksh2.6 billion for an event that happens for three days a year, and you have staff that are not being paid. It is criminal.

“I called for a special audit, and among the projects being audited is the WRC Sfari Rally. Whatever resources are given to this event government wants to see value for money, and accountability is not negotiable.

He warned that those who will be found to have done any malpractice after the audit is concluded would face criminal charges.

Recently, the Sports CS changed WRC Safari Rally committees through a Kenya Gazette notice on Friday, February 10.

Namwamba noted that members of the Steering Committee and Organising Committee would serve one year starting January 4, 2023.

Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF) chairman Phineas Kimathi, the previous  Chairman and CEO, was appointed as the secretary of the Steering Committee.

The 2023 WRC Safari Rally will take place from June 22 to 25, in Naivasha, with Namwamba serving as the chairperson of the Steering Committee deputised by the Principal Secretary for Sports, Jonathan Mueke.
