18-year-old Ishmael Kipkurui emerged victorious in the men's 3,000m race at the Maurie Plaente in Melbourne with a time of 7:41.38.
The Maurie Plant Meet occurred on Thursday, February 23, and kicked off World Athletics Continental Tour Gold.
Kipkirui was fresh from setting history in Bathurst, where he ended Kenya's drought in the junior men's World Athletics Cross Country Championship.

His win in Australia set the 2023 World's leading time over the 3000m distance, breaking Fouad Messaoudi's time of 7:41.38.
Following Kipkirui at second was Australia's Stewart McSweyn in 7:44.36, with Uganda's 19-year-old Dan Kibet taking the third position in 7:50.11.
The women's 3000m race was won by Senayet Gatachew, setting a Personal Best of 8:46.54.
She was followed by Uganda's Prisca Chesang and Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka in second and third respectively.
In the other races, the world's fastest man in 2022, Fred Kerly, began his season with a win in the 200m race, clocking 20:32.
Kerley began his celebration about 40m away from the finish line as the Australian duo of Rohan Browning, and Aidun Murphy finished second and third positions, respectively.
Next on the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold schedule list is the Grenada Invitational, which will take place at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium on April 22.
