Former World Cross country bronze medalist Lilian Kasait Rengeruk edged out world cross country champion Hellen Obiri to win the 5,000m final during day one of Olympic Games trials at Kasarani.

The Kenya Prison athlete posted a time of 14:52.18 to finish ahead of  Obiri 14:52.51 of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).  Agnes Jebet Tirop (14:53.91) finished third.

Kasait said: “I didn’t expect to win, I thank God for victory and Good Health. The races was tactical. I didn’t have many races but my preparations was uninterrupted. My wish is to ensure we work as a team in Tokyo to ensure we deliver podium finishes,”

Obiri has meanwhile revealed her desire to graduate to road races in 2021.

The 31-year-old has said this will be her last year on track as she draws closer to retirement. 

"This will be my last year on track, I am planning to graduate to road races next year, " she said.
