Finally, the long awaited FKFPL Trophy has been unveiled and equay met with mixed reactions from football fans and analysts as well. The 50,000 dollar 24 carat gold Trophy that weighs approximately 11 kilograms was unveiled on Wednesday evening, July 28th by FKF President, Nick Mwendwa. The trophy arrives straight from Dubai, just weeks before the Betking Premier League comes to a close in August.
Since the country’s football governing body, Football Kenya Federation (FKF), took over the running of the top-flight domestic league at the start of the current season, president Nick Mwendwa had revealed that the new FKF Premier League Board will be purchasing a new trophy made out of pure gold for the new title winners this season.
The federation however endured a hard time in shipping the trophy that was made in Dubai into the country ever since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic which made it almost a hard task for successful logistic plans to be executed. That is however not the case anymore as the official league portal confirmed the arrival of the league trophy yesterday.
Due to security and safety reasons, Mwendwa also revealed that they had come to an agreement of keeping the trophy under lock and key at KCB bank. “We have already booked KCB Bank and that is where we will keep it [the trophy], it is round in shape, very good for everyone’s eyes, these are some of the changes we promised after taking over the league.” Mwendwa said. The Trophy was presented live on Citizen TV, Mwendwa saying that it would be paraded to the public in due course.
Apart from the golden trophy, Mwendwa also confirmed that the winner of the league will also take home a cool Ksh 5Million, while the same amount will be shared among the remaining 17 clubs.
