After losing out to Burundi on penalties, the Kenyan under 23 squad still couldn't get a better ending to their CECAFA Challenge Cup campaign. The Emerging stars were lined up against South Sudan in a third place playoff but fell short losing 1-0 at Bahir Dar Stadium, Ethiopia.
Dani Lual who plays for Mathare United, drew first blood at the 78th minute and the two teams saw the lone goal separate them at the final whistle. Initially, the match was supposed to be played on Friday but CECAFA in conjunction with the Local Organising Committee carried on with the match without any specified reasons.
Head Coach, Stanley Okumbi made four changes to the squad that lost to Burundi 4-2 on post-match penalties during the semifinals, opting for Brian Wepo, Oliver Maloba, John Njuguna, David Odhiambo in place of Austine Odhiambo, Boniface Muchiri, Josephat Lopaga and Fredrick Alushula who all dropped to the bench.
The changes however did not come in handy as the South Sudanese boys held up a tight defense that saw them keep a decent clean sheet.
