Kenyan Rugby legend Humphrey Kayange has revealed that his first gold medal was stolen from his house soon after the famous HSBC Singapore leg.
In 2016 Kenya won the HSBC Singapore Sevens in sensational fashion, beating Fiji 30-7 to lift a first ever Cup title.
Kayange in an interview with World Rugby noted that the current medal he possesses from Singapore was his second as the first one was stolen from his house.
“I kid you not, this is my second medal. The first one was stolen from my house, so I had to write and plead back to Singapore, the organizers at Singapore and be like: “Okay guys, the only medal I’ve ever won has been stolen, can I please get a replacement?” Kayange revealed.
Kayange during the interview noted that he and his brother Collins have always been competing since they were kids.
‘Me and my brothers are very competitive, especially myself and Collins. When Collins came on board, I mean, he always wants to have his way and he can push you to the limit,” Kayange stated.
The former Kenyan rugby player also noted that the already established bond between him and the brother helped a lot in his career.
Our bond as brothers made us stronger because he would cover me, I would cover him just automatically, just by being your brother's keeper, like it's your brother,” Humphry noted.
Kayange noted that by him being a team player he did not expect the nominations he got in 2009 and 2013 as the world's sevens player of the year.
“So, at that point I was like there is no way I would get this award on my own. I give true recognition and I pick it on behalf of players who I played with and against because they all brought out the best in my capabilities,” he added.
Kayange was awarded the Order of Golden Warrior in 2009 by the then President Mwai Kibaki in recognition for his contribution to sports in Kenya.
Humphery also shared how he landed his job at the international Olympic committee.
“I think in 2019, we were asked whether we would be interested to vie and be on the international Olympics Athletes Commission where after the voting I became sixth. They picked the top four but I was the top I Africa and, on that note, I got appointed just to ensure there is diversity and inclusion in terms of having a candidate from the Africa sort of region,” Kayange added
