The London Marathon is one of the Kenyan athlete's favourite events. Since its inception in 1981, the runners have registered the highest number of wins - 16.

Douglas Wakiihuri was the first Kenyan to be successful at the London Road Race in 1989 after he set a world record at 2:09:03.

At this year's event, Kenya will have an uphill task as it only has one runner, Amos Kipruto.

Ethiopians dominate the top seven with five athletes and seem to be the favourites to walk with the gold medal.

In a recent interview with Lets Run, Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele noted that he wanted to achieve more despite turning 40.

Bekele is the fastest runner on the list, with a personal best time of 2:01:41 after winning the 2019 Berlin Marathon. The 40-year-old Ethiopian will be racing as an M40 masters’ category runner.

Another favourite for the pole position is Ethiopia’s Sisay Lemma who is the defending champion. Lemma won the 2021 edition clocking 2:04:01.

Sisay is fourth fastest on the start list with a time of 2:03:36, which he registered after finishing third at the Berlin Marathon in 2019.

Kenya's Amos Kipruto is the third fastest on the list after setting a personal best time of 2:03:13 at the Tokyo Marathon where he finished second behind world record holder Eliud Kipchoge.

The race that will happen on Sunday, October 2, will see the world record holder Eliud Kipchoge not participate as a competitor.

Kipchoge will be awarding winners at the Mini London Marathon on Saturday, October 1, a week after setting a world record at 2:01:09 in the Berlin edition.
