“Our thoughts are with Derek Redmond and his family following the death of his father, Jim.
“Together, they brought us one of the most inspirational moments in Olympic history,” read the statement by the Olympics Games.
After helping his son Jim noted that he had been told he could not access the track in Spanish but replied to the official that he was going to help his son.
Derek Redmond was helped by his father for about 75 to the finish line while in tears as the crowd was on its feet.
Despite the officials trying to convince Jim and his son to leave the track the two still pushed until the finish line.
During the 2012 London Marathon Jim was chosen to be the Olympic Torchbearer to honour him for what he did at the 1992 Olympics.
In a past interview, Jim noted that even though his son did not win gold at the 1992 Olympics the race will be forever remembered.
