Peres Jepchirchir has withdrawn from the upcoming New York City Marathon due to an injury.

Jepchirchir is the only male or female athlete to have won the Olympic, New York City and Boston Marathons.

The 29-year-old Kenyan won the 2021 Tokyo Olympic marathon before winning the TCS New York City Marathon in her U.S. racing debut four months later.

“I’m so disappointed that I must withdraw from the TCS New York City Marathon.

“I worked very hard with my physio team to recover from this injury in time for the race, but we did not have enough time. I believe I will be back stronger next year, but for now, my doctors say I must rest and heal my injury first. I want to wish good luck to everybody in the race,” Jepchirchir stated.

Another athlete set to withdraw is Kenyan-born American athlete Elkanah Kibet, who will be on a military mission overseas.

Kibet, who finished in fourth place at the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon, is a lieutenant in the U.S. Army and has received orders to report overseas, thus making it impossible for him to travel to New York for the race.

The Kenyan athletes featured at the race include Edna Kiplagat, defending champion Albert Korir and the reigning Boston Marathon champion Evans Chebet.

The 2022 TCS, New York City Marathon, will take place on Sunday, November 6, and will see 50,000 runners participating.
