Senegalese forward Sadio Mane will not feature at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, according to French publication L'Equipe.

Mane was subbed off during Bayern Munich’s 6-1 thrashing of Werder Bremen in a German Bundesliga clash on Tuesday night, November 8.

After the comfortable win, Dino Toppmoeller, Bayern Munich's assistant coach, stated that Mane's injury was not serious.

"Sadio Mane was hit in the leg. Nothing serious and his World Cup participation is not in question," he stated then.

However, L'Equipe reported on Wednesday, November 9, that the former Liverpool forward picked up a tendon injury and is expected to be out for several weeks.

After L'Equipe broke the sad news, multiple award-winning sports journalist Usher Komugisha disclosed that she spoke with a Senegalese official, who informed her that they are yet to receive any information from Bayern.

"Team Senegal official tells me; “We haven’t yet received any official communication from Bayern Munich regarding Sadio Mane.

“When we do, we’ll also have our Team Doctor Abdulrahman Fedior check him to assess the situation. We did the same for Edouard Mendy in September," read a statement from Komugisha.

The 30-year-old was expected to play a crucial role in Senegal’s World Cup campaign, having helped them to lift the coveted African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2021.

Mane scored the winning goal in both the AFCON final and the last round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Egypt.

Should Senegal miss their talisman, its chances of registering a good performance would be greatly reduced.
