Waithaka, Kiplimo to Renew Rivalry in Seville

World half marathon record holder Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda and Kenyan middle distance runner Stanley Waithaka Mburu will renew their rivalry at the 2022 Cross Internacional de Itálica in Seville, Spain, on Sunday, November 20.

Waithaka and Kiplimo will be going head to head for the first time since their last meeting at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, United States.

In Eugene, Waithaka, who shifted his training camp to Japan, outpaced Kiplimo at the finishing line to win a silver medal for Kenya.

He clocked 27:27.90 to finish behind Kiplimo’s compatriot Joshua Cheptegei, who is also the reigning world record holder over the distance.

Kiplimo, one of Uganda’s most successful runners, has a 10,000m personal best of 26:33.93 ahead of Sunday's showdown.

The 22-year-old athlete registered several commanding wins this season. He won two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games before topping it up with the Great North Run title in September.

Mburu, on the other hand, boasts of a personal best of 27:13.01, which he set in Yokohama, Japan, in 2018.

Waithaka and Kiplimo will line up alongside the likes of Levy Kibet (Kenya), Merhawi Mebrahtu (Eritrea), Thierry Ndikumwenayo (Burundi) and Rodrigue Kwizera ( Burundi). 

 In the women's category, Uganda's Peruth Chemutai will battle it out with the likes of 1,500m World Under 20 champion Purity Chepkirui (Kenya), Nancy Jepleting (Kenya) and Meselu Berhe (Ethiopia).

Portuguese international Mariana Machado and multiple European Cross-Country winner Yasemin Can will also be in contention.
