Barcelona has announced that Robert Lewandowski is eligible to play against Espanyol on Saturday, December 31.

The Polish striker was supposed to face a three-match ban after being sent off against Osasuna before the World Cup.

Lewandowski was to receive a one-match suspension after picking up two yellow cards but his gesture afterward resulted in the suspension being added for two other games.

“Lewandowski can play tomorrow against Espanyol after the dispute settlement court in Madrid issued a precautionary measure against the suspension imposed by the court of arbitration for sport,” the statement from Barcelona read.

Lewandowski had complained over the punishment terming it as too severe.

The development came as a huge relief and boost for Barcelona as the club strives to maintain the top spot in the Spanish league.

Lewandowski is La Liga's top scorer in the ongoing 2022/2023 season so far with 13 goals in 14 games.

It is not yet clear whether Lewandowski will start the match against Barcelona's local rivals at Camp Nou.

Barcelona head coach Xavier Hernández during the pre-match presser also announced Barcelona’s new captain as Marc-André ter Stegen.

Ter Stegen was announced as the fourth Barcelona captain taking over from Gerard Pique who announced his retirement from club football in November 2022.
