Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has intervened to sponsor the Kothbiro Tournament after it was suspended due to lack of funds.

According to a press release by Kothbiro Chairman Paul Ojenge, the tournament will come to a conclusion following Sakaja’s intervention.

This means that the final between Leads United and Team Korogez will be played on Saturday, February 18, 2023.

“The sponsorship by Sakaja will see the winners walk away with Ksh150,000, 2nd place will walk away with Ksh80,000, 3rd and 4th place will get Ksh 50,000 and Ksh20,000 respectively.

“Sakaja's sponsorship also includes kits branding for the finals,” part of the statement read.

The final had initially been set to take place on Saturday, February 4.

According to Paul Ojenge at the time, Sakaja has been a supporter of the tournament for a long time and his intervention was a big win for the tournament.

"This is a big win not only for the organisers but also for the players who have fought really hard to get to this final point. We also thank the fans for their patience as well," Ojenge stated.

The 2023 Kothbiro tournament saw more than 50 teams from different counties register as participants.

In his previous statement, the Kothbiro tournament chairman highlighted that the purpose of the tournament was to help build and nurture football talents at the grassroots level.
