Omanyala Sets World Lead Time at Nyayo Stadium

Africa's fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala recorded a world lead time of 9:86 at teh Athletics Kenya Track and Field Meet at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, February 24.

Omanyala broke the time that was held by Tiaan Whelpton (10:18) set in Hawkes Bay Sports Park on January 21, 2023.

After the win, Omanyala noted that his plan was to lower the time come Saturday, February 24, in the final.

"I am happy for this time in my first race outdoors this year but I plan to dip under 9.80 in the final on Saturday. I am happy that my body has responded well to training and it is a good place to be this early in the season. 

“The plan for this season is to win the world championships and the Diamond League trophy," Omanyala added.

In an earlier communication by Athletics Kenya, it was highlighted that teh event would help athletes gain ranking points as it was enlisted in the World Athletics Competition Ranking. 

Omanyala went into the race following his new national record in the 60m when he finished first at the Meeting Lievin Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais on Wednesday, February 15.

The Commonwealth 100m champion set the current Kenyan record in the 60m race with a time of 6:54 seconds.

At the indoor races, Omanayala registered three victories and one loss.
