An Afghan National Team player, Zaki Anwari, died in a fall from a plane at Kabul Airport on Monday, August 16.
According to the Afghan news agency called Ariana, the footballer was believed to have died after attempting to hold on to the outside of the American military aircraft.
Crowds of people seeking to leave Afghanistan had fled to the airport since the Taliban seized the capital on Sunday, August 15. In dramatic scenes, some tried to board a moving plane as it prepared to take off for Qatar.
Ariana stated that Zaki fell from an USAF Boeing C-17 and that the death had been confirmed by the General Directorate for sport.
The US Air Force said on Wednesday, August 18 that it was conducting a review of what exactly transpired as Afghan civilians ran alongside the plane, desperately trying to latch onto it.
"In addition to online videos and press reports of people falling from the aircraft on departure, human remains were discovered in the wheel well of the C-17 after it landed at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar," said the Air Force.
The aeroplane was reported to be carrying some 640 Afghans, which was reportedly more than five times its maximum capacity.
