23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena William announced on Wednesday, August 25 that she has pulled out of the US Open due to an injury on her right leg. "After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring," wrote the star on her Instagram.

For the last three years, the 39-year-old has been chasing the all-time grand slam singles record of 24 championships held by Margaret Court.

At Wimbledon, during the first set against Aliaksandra Sasnovich on June 29, she was in tears as she shook the hand of Sasnovich. Serena stumbled as she excited Centre Court, receiving assistance to reach the clubhouse.

Her sister, Venus Williams, also announced on the same day that she was also withdrawing from the US opening citing a leg injury.

In a video she stated that she was disappointed about missing out on the Open.

"I'm going to miss the Open, it's my favorite Slam. I've had so many amazing memories there, and I can't wait to get back out on the court, whenever that is. I'll work with my team to make it as soon as I can. No date at this time,” stated Venus who made her major debut at the US Open in 1997.

The Williams sisters are the latest high-profile names to miss out on the tournament.

Serena stated that New York is one of her favorite places to play.

“New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play. I'll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone on from afar.”

“Thank you for your continued support and love. I'll see you soon," she added.
