As the preparation of the Tokyo Olympics gather momentum, various sports federations around the world are doing their level best to put their players in fine form ahead of the summer games.
In Kenya however, athletes are forced to conduct individual training from their homes as sporting events have been suspended in the country due to the high rise of COVID 19 cases.
Here are some facts you need to know about Team Kenya in the Olympics:
The first edition of the Olympic games were held in Athens in the year 1896 with a total of 14 nations participating in the competition. Kenya first participated in the Olympics in 1956.The international summer competitions were held in Melbourne Australia in the same year that Kenya debuted.
Through the National Olympics Committee of Kenya ,the Nation has been able to send a total of 406 Olympians to the international competition with 96 of the total being women whereas the majority being men who according to the Olympian database sum up to 310.
Kenya has bagged in a total of 103 medals since featuring at the Olympics in 1956. Of the 103 medals 7 were accumulated from boxing while the rest 96 of them were attained in athletics which is a sport that Kenya is commonly known for.
In the boxing competition of the summer Olympic games Kenya has earned 1 gold medal 1 silver and a total of 5 bronze.
In athletics Kenya has summed up 31 Gold medals, 38 silver pieces and 34 Bronze pieces of medals.
First Kenyan Olympian to win a medal was Legend Nabiba Naftali Temu who won a gold medal in the 10000m race at the Olympics which were held in Mexico back in 1968 after a failed attempt in the previous Olympics in Tokyo back in 1964.
Although South Africa is the African country with the most Gold medals in the Olympics Kenya has the most total medals in the continent.
Despite the challenges currently faced by Kenyan athletes on the suspension of sporting events by the government they still look forward to putting up a remarkable performance in Tokyo come 23rd July this year. The International Olympics Committee will have to conduct the games behind closed doors.
