With the ongoing Paralympics, mixed feelings were shared between different athletes but for Erick Sang, losing out on a podium finish was certainly a huge disappointment. Sang, guided by Erick Kirui after his usual guide David Korir got injured on Monday due to being tripped, finished a distant sixth, clocking 4:21.53 in the men's 1500M T11.
His guide David Korir was tripped by a Brazilian challenger sending the visually impaired athlete crashing on the advertising boards. Sang described the crash as unfortunate, but that it happens in such competitions. Brazilian Yeltsin won the 1500M T11 final clocking a time of 3:57.60.
"It would also be good to arrive at these Games much earlier for acclimatization. The heat and humidity here really affected us because we have been training in high altitude back home in Kenya. We should have been here at least one week before the competition.” Said Sang and also proposed for para athletes be allowed to train with able-bodied athletes who will help them gain the pace and shape of the Elites. Kenya is currently at 70th position in the medal standings having won only one bronze medal.
