It will be an East African derby at the Nyayo stadium as Kenya hosts Uganda in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier.

Both teams have never appeared at the global showpiece and this will be a perfect opportunity for them.

Kenya and Uganda are in group E alongside Mali and Rwanda who squared off on Wednesday with the hosts Mali winning by a solitary goal.

Kenya and Uganda have a rivalry stretching to 1926 on May 1 when the two drew 1-1 in a CECAFA Cup match played at the City Stadium, Nairobi.

Since then, the two teams have faced each other 76 times with Kenya winning 22 of those games to Uganda’s 32 with the other 23 games ending in draws.

The last time the two met in competitive football was on 8 September 2019 in a friendly game hosted at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

On April 30, 1937 Uganda thumped Kenya 9-0 to record the highest score ever between the two sides.

In the last five meetings, three games have ended in draws with each registering a win in the other matches.

Ahead of the match, there will be key battles and men to watch on both sides.

Joseph Okumu

The lanky defender has become a very important player for Kenya ever since stepping in for Brian Mandela at the 2019 Afcon in Egypt.

Recently, Okumu signed for KAA Gent and his star has continued to rise. On Thursday afternoon, he will be up against the likes of Emmanuel Okwi and Derrick Nsibambi.

Murudhid Jjuuko

He is the main man in Uganda’s defence and will be looking at ensuring that they do not soak in goals. Jjuko will have to be at his best to keep out captain Micheal Olunga.

Kenneth Muguna

He has grown to become one of the most influential players in the Harambee Stars squad. The former Gor Mahia man, now at Azam will be tasked with creating chances and winning balls for Stars in midfield.

Emmanuel Okwi

The experienced forward scored the last time the two teams met at Kasarani, having traversed many countries, Okwi will lead the frontline once again and Harambee Stars defenders have to be wary of his threat and trickery.
