Samia Suluhu To Sponsor CECAFA Women Cup

Samia Suluhu

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu has vowed to sponsor the ongoing CECAFA Women's Champions League Qualifiers with a deal that equates to $ 100,000. Apparently the tournament has been renamed to CECAFA Samia Women Cup with the winner set to be awarded a cash prize of $ 30,000, the runners up getting $ 20,000 and the third best team at $ 10,000.

The big move will certainly rub off well with the sporting fraternity more so after the Tanzanian president crossed paths with women in sports due to her controversial sentiments. Suluhu got criticism after remarks that attacked women footballers and their lives beyond the pitch. The President is now following in the footsteps of Rwanda's long serving president, Paul Kagame who sponsors the men's club championship. Kagame's sponsorship is worth $ 60,000 a year.

The Tournament is currently on going and features Simba Queens from Tanzania, Lady Doves (Uganda), PVP FC (Burundi) and FAD FC (Djibouti) all in Group A, Group B; Kenya’s Vihiga Queens FC, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Yei Joint Stars (South Sudan) and New Generations (Zanzibar). The winner from the CECAFA qualifiers will join the other seven to battle in the 2021 TotalEnergies Women’s Champions League to be held in Egypt.
