Vihiga Queens Are Crowned CECAFA Samia Women Cup Champions

Vihiga Queens

What a final it was as Vihiga Queens beat Ethiopia's CBE FC 2-1 to win the CECAFA Samia Women Cup. Vihiga Queens will now be heading to Egypt as the regions sole representative in the CAF Women's Champions League. Vihiga also won themselves a whopping cash prize of $ 30,000 as earlier promised by the sponsorship of Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu.

"The first game against CBE we had a loose defense but in this game we packed our defense well and made sure we pressed hard. We will continue trading and also correct our mistakes as we head to the CAF Champions League." Said Vihiga Head coach Boniface Nyamunyamu.

" I'm really happy cause we had planned ourselves even though we had a feeling CBE thought they would beat us for a second time in the tournament. I didn't have any pressure scoring the penalty and when we head to Egypt we would like to have good training facilities," said Jentrix Shikangwa who was undoubtedly the player of the match with her constant attacking efforts and impressive play oozing with skill and determination.

The First half began with the bankers being more tactical in the game play launching clinical attacks that were quickly shut down by the Queens' hard defense. Vihiga Queens didn't waste any time on closing up and shutting down gaps that could prove beneficial for the Bankers. Vihiga however capitalized on a goalkeeping mistake to score. Jentrix Shikangwa being the netter making it 7 goals under her name in the tournament.

Right after the half hour mark, the Bankers valiantly came back launching promising attacks that got fully checked by keeper Lillian Owuor. Dark clouds however loomed in when a lobbed ball from a free kick position had Vihiga's Vivian Makokha head in an awful own goal getting the Bankers back in the game.

After a long tussle that saw Vihiga constantly knocking, an answer finally came in the dying minutes when Violet Wanyonyi got fouled in the half yard box giving Queens an injury time penalty kick. On the Spot was Jentrix who absolutely fired it in the back of the net to seal the game at 2-1.
