Boxers who will win medals during the World Boxing Championships will receive cash rewards from the International Boxing Association (AIBA).
This will be the first time financial bonuses are being introduced for the medal winners, something that has of course come as a boost for the national boxing team that is currently preparing for the global event.
According to AIBA, Gold medalists will take home 100,000 dollars (Sh11 million), silver medalists 50,000 dollars (Sh5.5 million) and bronze medalists 25,000 dollars (Sh2.7 million).
The global championships are set for Belgrade, Serbia from October 23 to November 7.
2015 Africa Boxing Championships lightweight gold medalist Nick ‘Commander’ Okoth said winning the cash awards was achievable and the move by AIBA had inspired them.
The 13 boxers have been in high intensity training at the AV Fitness Gymnasium in Lavington, Nairobi for the past eight weeks.
Heavyweight Elly Ajowi and flyweight Nick Okoth are among the boxers who will be eyeing glory in Serbia after their dreams for maiden medals at the Tokyo Olympics were shuttered.
