As confusion was raised amid directives from the President on lifting the curfew with immediate effect on the eve of Mashujaa celebrations onwards, Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe was quick today afternoon on dishing out a better clarification.
CS Kagwe maintained that other Covid-19 protocols including hand washing and sanitisation at bars and restaurants are still in place. The CS also clarified that sporting events would follow through the safety measures as previously done before, stating that all sports events will still be held behind closed doors and vaccination exercises are still in effect.
"The same protocol measures apply and in fact we are very happy with what we have seen with the sporting fraternity and I think they are ahead of us. I want to thank the Ministry of Sports because they have ensured all persons coming into the country for sporting activities are fully vaccinated. We also want to make sure that those participating in the country are also fully vaccinated. With those kinds of measures, we can continue opening up our country," said Kagwe with regards to sporting events in the country.
He was speaking today during a press conference at Afya House, where he urged Kenyans to continue following his Ministry's rules on safeguarding against coronavirus spread. "There is a lot of pressure on the Government to open up the sports industry but such a decision must be led by facts and science, but not feelings," Kagwe earlier pointed out.
CS Kagwe had also further hit out at athletes who do not observe COVID-19 containment measures putting their lives at risk. "We know ourselves better. You will see some people instead of isolating themselves, you spot them in the sports areas contacting themselves." The suspension of sports in March this year has had a huge impact on the FKF Kenyan Premier League, the Kenya Cup, the Kenya Basketball League and the National Volleyball League which have now fully resumed but without the ever buzzing crowds of fans.
