For Mara Sugar FC head coach, Steve Biko, the barren at Sony Stadium in Awendo facing Shabana FC was well received bearing in mind that this was their first game of the season in the Nation's 2nd tier of football.
Shabana coach Robert Ojienda even though also contented said his team which comprises of many new faces have not yet gelled. “Being the first game of the season, we introduced several new players who have not played together for long. I believe we have learned from the game. It’s a game we would have won but my players spurned some good scoring chances,” said Ojienda.
He heaped praises on Mara Sugar. “They worked extra and they wanted to prove a point after promotion to the National Super League,” noted Ojienda.
He also said they have completed their recruitment process but did not field some of his new signings because their cards were not yet ready.
Biko said: “This was a good result against an experienced Shabana. We matched Shabana and at one point dominated them. I’m satisfied with the draw because it is what we wanted. This will give my players confidence in the next game against Kisumu United.”
Biko maintained that indeed the team helped Mara Sugar gain promotion to the National Super League but will still sign additions to create depth.
“I will add one or two players before the transfer window concludes on Friday,” added Biko. The focus, he added, will be on the strike force which was blunt during the Shabana game. “My strikers did not give their best in the game maybe because of stage fright. It’s one area I will work on this week,” added Biko.
