Vihiga Queens, Violet Wanyonyi made history by scoring the country’s first goal at the inaugural Women’s CAF Champions League.

Violet talks about Vihigas continental journey and the lessons learnt from their experience in the competition.

She narrated how a slight miscalculation led to their exit in the Women’s CAF Champions League.

“We totally wanted to win the competition, we expected to win it. We arrived well prepared but luck was not on our side. There’s a next time though,” Violet stated.

The winger highlighted that they had expected ASFAR would be their hardest game but to their surprise Rivers Angels proved a menace to them.

“AS Far from Morocco was the team we knew would give us a headache but we were wrong. The one that actually gave us a run for our money was Rivers Angels. When they faced us, they played like they would never have to play again. They threw everything at us but we learn from our mistakes.”

“We won game 2, beating AS Far 2-0 and being our first time there, I’m sure our women’s teams will do well in future. I’m particularly proud that I scored the opening goal in that match and for that I am grateful. It’s good to be remembered for such things,” she added

She was keen to note that self-belief and giving it your all is important for a footballer who wants to be successful.

“Self-belief is key and giving it your all is also important. Football is both hard and easy. As Queens, we now know what it takes to be a champion- all the preps that need to be done. We tried our best nonetheless, playing at that level is not easy. You also have to believe in God.”

The Queens striker stated that her next plan was training to increase her pace in the game.

“I want to improve my pace and that means a lot of extra training. Football is all about the mind being right and focused. As the women’s premier league returns, I believe we are going to do well and as a striker I have to help the team win in every match,” she concluded.
