Recently there has been a debate concerning players' football insurance covers and how clubs cater for the expenses of their players' health.
Former Harambee Stars striker Dennis Oliech through a facebook post urged players to take personal insurance covers rather than depending on the club to sort out their medical issues.
Oliech's statement was based on his disappointment over the situation that is happening to Sofapaka midfielder Wisdom Nayah.
Wisdom, who is suffering from cancer, is in urgent need of medical assistance.
The 18-year old who had signed a three-year deal with Sofapaka in 2019 but his career was halted due to the unfortunate turn.
“Am urging footballers to get personal football insurance cover. Life in football can be short and you cannot depend on your club. In fact make it a priority. It is so unfortunate to see what is happening to Sofapaka midfielder Wisdom Nayah,” Oliech’s statement read.
“Take care of yourself as a player before the club takes care of you. Even in Europe players cater for their own football cover from their salary. The club just supports.” Oliech added.
After the post there were many different reactions from people online.
“We should agitate for good insurance covers from their individual clubs, the employer.”
“Wise words. Also advise them to further their education beyond secondary school level and get skills. Not necessarily college or university,” some of the comments read.
Speaking to TeamKenya Nzoia Sugar F.C .CEO,Evance Kadenge, pointed out that his team covers its players with medical insurance.
“Our players when we sign them to play for Nzoia are also given a contract as employees of the company. So as the company pays for the insurance of other employees also the players are covered.”
“So, when a player is injured the company incurs the cost of the players treatment, the company covers for everything,” Kadenge noted.
