Olympian and Commonwealth light flyweight bronze medalist Christine has stepped up her training for the forthcoming Africa Boxing Championships after earning her spot flawlessly.
Ongare who competes for Kenya Police and mostly paces up her training sessions at Nanyuki social hall, beat Lenca Akinyi of Nairobi County in the flyweight finals of the second leg of the Jamal Cup Championships at Grace Onyango Social Centre in Kisumu on Sunday 12th December.
She won the match after the referee stopped the contest in the first round of the flyweight championships. She has secured her slots for Africa Championships and World Women Boxing Championships set for Istanbul, Turkey, in March 2022 and Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England in July 2022.
Ongare, who formed the quartet that represented the country at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, says she is punching furiously on the bag to shore up her stakes at the forthcoming tournaments.
“Previously, I had been forced to feature in the classes that were far above my weight due to the absence of the light flyweight category. This made beating my opponents a big challenge considering they had more body mass,” said Ongare.
“She has made it to the continental and global championships after winning her bout,” said Boxing Federation of Kenya Communications director Duncan Kuria.
Other female boxers who have secured their tickets to the continental championships are lightweight(57kg) Beatrice Akoth of Nairobi County, bantamweight (54kg) Amina Martha of Kibra and flyweight (48kg) Ann Wanjiru of Kongowea Boxing Club of Mombasa County.
In the finals, Akoth dismissed Perita Refa of Kenya Prisons on unanimous points decision, Amina also beat Alice Weiyego of Nairobi on unanimous points’ decision while Wanjiru stopped Emily Juma on RSC in the third round.
