The United Kingdom (UK) government on Thursday, February 10, announced Ksh800 million financing funding for forest conservation and restoration.
In a statement issued by the UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions) it was revealed that the funding was as a result of the Kenyan government's pledge of having 5.1 million hectares of forest cover in the country by 2030.
The UK government also announced Ksh75 million funding for the program to restore over 1,000 hectares cover of Kaptagat forest in Elgeyo Marakwet County by elite Kenyan athlete, Eliud Kipchoge.

The UK PACT noted that they were in search of programs that would help in formulating and influencing policies regarding the climate change conversation in Kenya.
The Kaptagat forest is known as a hub where many athletes go because of its high altitude of 2,800 metres above sea level.
“Breathing to keep you going, breathing to feel alive. Athletes train in the Kaptagat forest. They need the forests, it is good for their health and for good breathing. I want the world to breathe well. Without forests, you cannot breathe.” Kipchoge stated earlier.
The world record holder, Kipchoge recently adopted 50 hectares of forest land in the Kaptagat Forest in bid to boost government conservation efforts.
It was noted that Eliud Kipchoge through his Foundation will actively provide the necessary resources for the implementation of the restoration of this part of the forest for the next five years.

The conducive nature of the forest provides clean air and low population density which makes it a superb training ground for long distance athletes.
“Restoring the forest and handing it over to our children and grandchildren when it is intact is the best gift we can give them. I will finish this race with you,” Kipchoge stated previously.
The legendary athlete has been challenging individuals, corporate entities and citizens to conserve forest through tree planting activities.
He has also been urging the neighbouring communities to preserve the forest as it is a source of clean water, clean air and also be a boost to their economic livelihoods.
