The just-concluded African Schools Cup has come under close scrutiny over the alleged fielding of overage players.

This came to the fore when photos from the closing ceremony, graced by FIFA President Giani Infantino, emerged on social media.

Netizens took a swipe at some of the players who looked well above the age limit that should have been Under-16.

“That DR Congo player is older than the FIFA president. The sweetest thing is that he knows this himself,” read one comment.

“Congratulations to them but no way this guy can be Under-16. I rest my case,” another added.

Infantino was accompanied at the event by FIFA General Secretary Fatma Samoura and CAF President Patrice Motsepe, among other dignitaries and delegates.

He lauded the tournament’s organization while noting that the tournament was an embodiment of the beauty of football.

“I am a happy man tonight. Seeing those children smile, boys and girls, with joy in their eyes, is wonderful,” said the FIFA President.

“This is the beauty of football. DR Congo did a great job organising this event, which is the first edition of a fantastic competition that is going to become one of the biggest not only in Africa but around the world too,” added Infantino.

The tournament brought together schools from Morocco, Benin, South Africa and Ethiopia, in an Under-16 Boys and Girls event.

Morocco won the girls title while hosts DRC took home the boys trophy. This was the inaugural edition of the youth tournament.
