Roman Abramovich's 19-year era as Chelsea owner is close to coming to an end after the Russian billionaire decided to sell the club.

Abramovich is looking to cut ties with the west London club over fears the UK government could sanction him after Russia invaded Ukraine.

The 55-year-old Billionaire bought the Blues back in 2003 and has since managed to make the club a formidable team in England.

The Russian Billionaire transformed Chelsea into a powerhouse. It was during his tenure the Stamford Bridge-based side was able to establish itself as a force to reckon with both domestically and in Europe.

Abramovich has broken the club's transfer record nine times during his time at the helm, with the most recent coming in the summer when he splashed £98m to acquire the services of Romelu Lukaku.

While the Russian's huge investment in transfers had some hits, others, including the acquisition of Fernando Torres were huge misses.

Teamkenya.co.ke now takes a look at Roman Abramovich's greatest first 11 during his era at the London-based club.

Goalkeeper: Petr Čech

He is obviously the greatest goalkeeper to have ever donned Chelsea colors. He arrived in the London-based club in the summer of 2004 from Rennes.

The Czech Republican shot-stopper went on to establish himself as a club legend and an undroppable presence under the likes of Jose Mourinho, Avram Grant, Carlo Ancelotti, and more.

Cech, during his prime years, was the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

He currently serves at Stamford Bridge as a director after retiring in May 2019.

Defenders: Azpilicueta, Carvalho, Ivanovic, Cole

Many would argue why the Chelsea legend John Terry is not on the defender's list but the English defender arrived at Stamford Bridge before Abramovich took charge.

Ricardo Carvalho and Branislav Ivanovic would be a strong center-back pairing.

Carvalho followed Mourinho from Porto to Chelsea in 2004 and, along with John Terry, made the Blues difficult to beat.

Ivanovic was a low-key signing in January 2008 from Lokomotiv Moscow but would go on to help the club win three league titles.

At right-back, Cesar Azpilicueta would get the nod having been a regular in the side for over a decade signing for the London side in 2012

Ashley Cole was certainly worth all the trouble after Chelsea brought him in from Arsenal in the summer of 2006, with the left-back scaling new heights in north London.

Midfield: Makelele, Kante, Ballack

Chelsea raided Real Madrid in 2003 by landing Claudio Makelele. The Frenchman established himself as a cult hero of North London changing Premier League football forever in the process.

N’Golo Kante has been similarly brilliant ever since touching down from Leicester back in the summer of 2016.

Given we can’t have Frank Lampard, because the Chelsea record goal scorer arrived at Stamford bridge in 2001 before Abramovich took charge, Michael Ballack would then get the nod.

The German was unplayable, the German machine would cruise into the first team hence writing his name on the hearts of Chelsea fans

Forwards: Cole, Drogba, Hazard

Didier Drogba is a straightforward pick for the Number 9 role. Signed by Mourinho back in 2004, the Ivory Coast international is fondly remembered as their best-ever Premier League striker.

Without Drogba, Chelsea may never have won the league titles they did. Certainly, their Champions League triumph in 2012 would have been difficult to achieve without the Ivorian.

On the right, Joe Cole just about gets into the side for he was unplayable in his prime.

And we’d go with Eden Hazard on the left, with the Belgium international unnervingly good prior to leaving for Real Madrid in 2019. Hazard, is said to be one of the best dribbling talents the Premier League has ever witnessed
