Football careers are short-lived, with a majority of the stars retiring at the age of 35.

Footballers are mostly advised to invest during their playing time or pursue education as a backup plan for the future.

There have been cases in the recent past where former footballers, after retirement, take to social media requesting help due to financial problems

Former Kenyan footballer Zacheaus Omondi, against all odds was able to juggle between football and education

Omondi who played for Tusker FC for seven years studied medicine at the University of Nairobi while still being active on the pitch.

The former footballer is currently practising medicine in Ireland. In a previous interview, he noted that his experience in football helped him pursue medicine.

When he moved to Ireland it took him five years to break through and start practising as a Locum Doctor.

During his active football days, in 1994, Omondi was part of the Tusker squad that lost to DC Motema Pembe of DR Congo in the final of CAF Cup Winners’ Cup at Nyayo Stadium.

After graduating, Omondi joined the likes of JJ Masiga and William Obwaka in the list of the few medical doctors in football by then.

After the loss with Tusker, he joined Gor Mahia but hang up his boots after one match to focus on the internship programme.

Omondui has practised medicine at Kangundo Sub-District hospital, Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi Hospital and Gertrudes Children Hospital.
