Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that outgoing Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was involved in early peace talks of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Abramovich, who is one of the oligarchs with assets worth billions in Britain was among those sanctioned by the UK government.
However, Kremlin spokesperson confirmed that the 55-year old was playing a part in initial peace negotiations.
“He did take part at the initial stage. Now the negotiations are between two teams, the Russians and Ukrainians,” said Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s Press Secretary.

Abramovich’s mother Irina, who was born in Ukraine, and his daughter Sofia also took to social media to declare that it is only Putin “who wants a war with Ukraine.”
A Spokesperson for the Chelsea owner released a statement four days into the Russian invasion declaring his support for Ukraine.
“I can confirm that Roman Abramovich was contacted by the Ukrainian side for support in achieving a peaceful resolution and that he has been trying to help ever since,” read the statement.
“Considering what is at stake, we would ask for your understanding as to why we have not commented on neither the situation as such nor his involvement. Thank you.”
Putin’s direct involvement in the matter indicates that Abramovich sought approval at the highest level to help start ceasefire negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in late February.
Western officers were in doubt on whether or not Abramovich played a role. Others suggested that he is avoiding western sanctions and fears losing control of his UK-based assets which include the Chelsea Football Club.
