Special Marathon to be Held Along Nairobi Expressway

Athletics Kenya has announced the introduction of a new annual race event that will take place on the newly-constructed Nairobi Expressway. 

In a statement on April 7, Athletics Kenya (AK) through their social media platforms announced that the  race will officially be known as the ‘Uhuru Classic City Marathon’. 

The annual event will start this year, with the marathon scheduled for May 8.

The Nairobi Expressway, which will be opened to the public starting Saturday, April 9, links Westlands and Mlolongo, in Machakos county covering a distance of 27.1km. 

"Entry to the event will be by registration and interested persons can now register on http://nairobicitymarathon.com The categories will include Full marathon, Half marathon, 10 km and 5km," stated Athletics Kenya on their Twitter account.

By having a city marathon Nairobi will join other cities like Chicago, London, Boston and New York, which consistently host races that have become famous, and attracting prominent athletes.

The Uhuru Classic Marathon is expected to feature prizes for athletes comparable to the major pay-outs by the already established city marathons.  

Athletes who win such kind of elite city marathons take home between Ksh5 million to Ksh15 million. 

Earlier Sports Cabinet secretary Amina Mohamed had announced that plans were underway to have the first ever city marathon. 

The ‘Uhuru Classic City Marathon will have various categories including Full marathon, Half marathon,10 km and 5km.
