Mane Becomes the African Top Scorer in Champions League Knockout Stages

On May 3, Liverpool’s forward Sadio Mane became the African top scorer in the champions league knockout stages. 

Liverpool advanced to the Champions League finals after defeating Villareal 3-2 with an aggregate score of 5-2 in the Champions League Semifinals.

Mane who scored the third goal for Liverpool overtook former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba after scoring 15 goals in just 26 matches.

The 30-year-old striker made his debut in the Champions League during the 2017-18 season.

Drogba, who is also a champions league winner was the highest-scoring African player, scoring 14 goals in 46 matches.

His Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah follows closely with 11 goals.

The only player who has more goals in the knockout stages is Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema with 16 goals.

The Senegal international had quite a successful year having already won the Africa Cup of Nations, qualified for the World Cup and now reached the Champions League final.

Mane who helped his country win the AFCON tournament is currently the reigning African Player of the Year.

Liverpool will be waiting to know their final opponent as Real Madrid clash with Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu on May 4.
