Former Harambee Stars international, Mc Donald Mariga was attacked by goons while campaigning in Gatwekera in Kibra on Monday, May 30.

A video seen by TeamKenya showed Mariga receiving first aid at a clinic. The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate's left arm appeared broken and a nurse at his aid was captured wrapping it in a sling.

His confidants confirmed that Mariga was ambushed by an armed gang.

"Yes, he was injured but he is recuperating well. The injury is not so alarming. In a few days, he will be back campaigning," his ally stated.

The former Intern Milan defensive midfielder accused his opponents of paying local gangs to disrupt his rallies.

He further condemned the incident and urged Kibra locals to promote peace throughout the election season.

In October 2019, the 35-year-old's convoy was attacked along Nong Road in October 2019 ahead of that year's by-election.

In the Ngong Road attack, no injuries were reported, but Mariga filed an official complaint with the police seeking compensation for the damage inflicted on his convoy.

Mariga was the first Kenyan to win the UEFA Champions League side, with Inter Milan then under head coach Jose Mourinho.

The retired defensive midfielder is the elder brother to Victor Wanyama who plays for the American Major Soccer League MLS team, CF Montreal.
