Peres Jepchirchir: The Making of a World Sensation Who Redefined Marathon

Kenyans are known for dominating road races such as marathons for decades, in most cases surpassing their own records.

Eliud Kipchoge and Peres Jepchirchir are the biggest names that have made a name for the country by changing the course of the competition.

TeamKenya.co.ke takes a look at Peres Jepchirchir and her success in the long-distance races.

Jepchirchir - who is mostly based in Kapsabet - has enjoyed perfect form in the last two years. 

She has had quite an outstanding marathon, currently enjoying a winning streak of six wins since 2020. 

During that period, she has been named a onetime Olympic Champion, two-time World Half Marathon Champion, current World Record holder - Half Marathon and three-time record holder. 

Jepchirichir began her winning streak in September 2020 by setting a world record in the women's half marathon in Prague. 

A month later, she broke her own record again at the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships in Gdynia on October 17. 

She raced again on December 6, in the 2020 Maratón Valencia Trinidad Alfonso while in pain and finished at pole position.

In the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, she continued her triumph by finishing top in the 42km Marathon race. 

The 28-year-old on November 7, 2021, emerged victorious in the New York Marathon, becoming the first person to win both the New York Marathon and Olympics gold medal in the same year. 

Her recent win came on April 18, when she finished first in the Boston Marathon. 

Jepchirchir was set to participate in the 2022 World Athletics Championship in Oregon, however, due to an injury she was forced to drop out of the competitions.
