Former Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o has backed Asamoah Gyan’s plans of representing Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup which begins on November 20 in Qatar.

According to Football Ghana, Eto'o wished Gyan all the best as he puts himself in contention for a World Cup spot.

"The motivation [to play at the World cup] is because of his love for his country and the champion player that he is.

"I think it’s a good thing to have a dream and I believe for all African sons that gave us joy while playing, it is just natural that they nurture such a dream. I hope that his dream becomes a reality. But as we are all aware, the final decision is that of the coach," stated Eto'o.

Gyan, who missed a decisive penalty in the dying minutes of their 2010 quarter-final clash against Uruguay to deny the Black Stars a chance of progressing to their first ever semi-final, announced recently that he intends to take part in the upcoming global showpiece.

“I've been out for almost two years now due to injuries but I just need to get my body back in shape. It's an eight-week programme and according to my physical instructor, I'm improving faster than he thought.

“I haven't announced my retirement. Anything can happen, you know? It's happened before, talking about Cameroon in 1994, with Roger Milla coming back from retirement to play in a World Cup," he was quoted by SuperSport.

The Baby Jet as he is commonly known, Gyan made his international debut at the tender age of 17 and has so far represented Ghana in three FIFA World Cup editions between 2006 and 2014.

Gyan has scored 51 goals for the Black Stars making him Ghana’s leading goal-scorer. 6 of those goals came in the FIFA World Cup tournament.

The 36-year-old who last featured in a competitive match in April 2020 has previously played for a number of European clubs including French Ligue 1 sides Rennes FC and Udinese FC as well as the English club Sunderland FC.
