Jose Mourinho’s new signing Georginio Wijnaldum has picked up a serious injury ahead of the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup to be staged in Qatar from November 20 to December 18, 2022.

The former Liverpool FC and Paris Saint Germain star was injured during an afternoon training season on Sunday, August 21.

AS Roma FC broke the news on their social media platforms disclosing that Wijnaldum had fractured his tibia.

“Following an injury sustained during training this afternoon, Georginio Wijnaldum subsequently underwent medical tests that confirmed the presence of a fracture to the tibia in his right leg.

“The player will undergo further assessments in the coming days,” read their Twitter statement.

As Roma manager Jose Mourinho defended Felix Afena Gyan over rumors that he was responsible for Wijnaldum's injury.

The Special One as he is known by many football fans took to Instagram to defend the Ghanian international.

“Sometimes football can be annoying. In only 2 weeks, Gini became one of us because of his human qualities (his football qualities we already knew).

“Sadly, in a very unfortunate accident he had a bad injury that will keep him away from playing for a long time.

“But it’s not just football that can be annoying sometimes, people can also be … Those who initiated the rumors that a top kid like Felix could be responsible for what happened are real scum,” read his Instagram post.

Mourinho ended his post by urging the As Roma fans to unite together ahead of tonight’s home match against Cremonese.

“Let’s all be together tonight: we play for @officialasroma, for gwijnaldum and for @ochenegyanfelix9,” he ended.

Wijnaldum was influential in Netherlands World Cup qualifying campaign helping the team return to the global showpiece after missing out in the 2018 edition held in Russia.

The box to box midfielder played the entire 90 minutes in their final qualifying match to help the Netherlands beat Norway 2-0 and qualify for the World Cup.

He left The Reds in the summer of 2021 and signed for Paris Saint Germain where he struggled to impress. Wijnaldum was recently signed by AS Roma FC on a loan.
