“Excited to sign and begin a new journey with Estrela Da Amadora in Portugal, looking forward to roaring again, a special thank you to my former club Wazito Football Club for the opportunity, memories and shaping my football career,” Omurwa noted.
The Portuguese club confirmed the acquisition of the 24-year-old but did not reveal the details of the contract as Omurwa is expected to help bolster the team’s defensive line.
“From Kenya to the Rebel. Central defender Johnstone Omurwa makes his first experience in Portugal ready to defend the colours of the Star!” the club post read.
The defender becomes the latest Kenyan player to seal a move abroad after Timothy ‘Babu’ Ouma moved to Swedish top flight side IF Elfsborg, Sven Yidah to South Africa’s Marumo Gallants while the duo of John Mark Makwatta and Duncan Otieno moved to Botswana champions Gaborone United.
Omurwa joined Wazito in 2017 after completing his secondary education before moving to Mathare United in 2018.
That same year, he made his debut for Kenya's national under-23 team, against Mauritius in a 2020 Olympics qualification match in November 2018.
The 24-year-old defender later returned to Wazito in August 2019 and earned a call-up to the national team during the opening round’s qualifier against Tanzania.
However, he was reserved for the bench and did not feature in the match.
On September 8, 2019, he made his debut for Harambee Stars as they faced Uganda in a friendly match. He later captained the national team against South Sudan where Harambee Stars registered a 1-0 victory.
