Athletics Kenya (AK) introduced a raft of measures in a bid to contain the rising cases of athletes using banned substances.

This comes after two Kenyan athletes, Michael Kunyuga Njenga and Maiyo Johnstone Kibet were recently suspended over anti-doping rule violations.

In their statement, AK noted that as a federation it has been taking measures to sensitize personnel involved in professional athletics to act in compliance with the Athletics Integrity Unit, World Athletics and Kenya Anti-Doping Act (2016).

“With effect from October 1, 2022, Athletics Kenya will commence the registration of athletics training camps including details of all personnel in residence therein and their respective roles vis-a-vis the athletes.

“Athletics Kenya will regulate, examine and certify all coaches working with Kenyan athletes within the country and without. Henceforth, it will be mandatory for all coaches handling Kenyan athletes in any jurisdiction to have requisite certification from Athletics Kenya,

The AK noted that all foreign coaches and athlete support personnel working within Kenya, and without, Kenyan athletes must have a license from the agency to carry out their professional duties.

The Federation noted it would thereafter forward approved applications from foreigners operating in Kenya to the Department of Immigration for provision of requisite work permits and any foreign coaches and athlete support personnel without such clearance will not be allowed to operate within Kenya.

It is also required that all foreign nationals living within areas where Kenyan or other athletes have their training camp within the country must indicate their physical addresses and details of their local contact people.

“All foreign athletes training in Kenya must furnish Athletics Kenya with their physical contacts and the particulars of their Kenyan contact persons henceforth,” part of the statement read.

In their statement, AK further assured the general public and stakeholders that the war against doping will continue.

The federation also urged the public to report any information regarding suspicious activities of any individual who is using banned substances to any AK office or the nearest police station.
