Malkia Strikers star Mercy Moim asked President Wiliam Ruto to help the team with funds before they travel to feature in the World Championship in the Netherlands.

The team are currently camping and training at Belgrade in Serbia ahead of the 2022 FIVB World Women Volleyball Championship.

Malkia travelled to the European country after spending 80 days in Brazil where they played a series of friendlies.

As they train in Serbia for six days, Moim, lamented that the team's progress was hampered by financial constraints. She thus asked President Ruto to intervene.

“We are in Serbia without any cash in our hands, it's just that we love our country, so if Mr. president you can help us with something small before we go to the world championship it would help us a lot.

“I would like to thank the Kenyan ambassador to Brazil for helping us at the last minute. We did not have anything to use, like basic needs, the ambassador paid us a visit and bought as flour together with other things,” Moim added.

Head coach Paul Bitok stated that the team has managed to play a total of 10 friendly matches in Brazil.

“We are in Serbia to play two friendly matches before the World Championship,” Bitok stated.

The six-day training in Belgrade, Serbia is expected to help the team acclimatize to the Eastern Europe climate.

While in Brazil the team trained in vigorous conditions with gruelling heat in South America.

“It is important to play these friendlies in Serbia because we will be focusing on our matches now. I really appreciate those who have arranged for these friendlies.

“This one will give us a lot of energy of working hard so that our performance in Serbia will show at least what we are going to do in the world championship,” Sharon Chumba stated.

The 2022 FIVB World Women Volleyball Championship will kick off on September 23, with Malkia set to play the Netherlands in their opening Pool-A match.
