Prior to facing Puerto Rico, Kenya had lost to Italy in a match in which head coach Paul Bitok rested key players.

Bitoks had urged his team to remain focused in order to scoop up the required three points in the Puerto Rico clash.

Malkia Strikers would have advanced to the second round for the first time in history if they had bagged a win against the South Americans.

Kenya was in Pool A  alongside African champions Cameroon, Belgium, Puerto Rico, Netherlands, and Italy.

In seven appearances at the World Championship, the Malkia Strikers have only won two matches.
