Germany ace Marco Reus has been ruled out of the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup signaling another setback for the Borussia Dortmund player after missing out on most action of the season due to a knee injury.

According to reports, German tactician Hansi Flick exuded confidence in Reus making it to the squad- however, a final medical check-up ruled out the talented midfielder.

Reus picked up the injury in Dortmund's clash against arch-rivals Schalke O4 on Saturday, September 17.

“Until the end, Flick had hoped for a timely recovery from the attacking player, who played an important role in his plans for the 26-man squad for Qatar,” read a statement from Sky Germany.

He returned to action after being sidelined for a few weeks, however, he aggravated the injury that he had picked up earlier and was running against time to return to action.

Injuries have disrupted Marco’s career, with the midfielder missing a number of high-profile tournaments.

This is the second time that the 33-year-old will not play a match at the World Cup since making his national team debut.

Reus also failed to feature in the 2014 edition due to an injury. The national team ended up winning owing to a 1-0 win over Argentina

In 2012, he was injured during Germany’s last warm-up match, thus missing the UEFA European Football Championship.

He also failed to make Germany’s squad for the 2016 Euros at the last minute as a result of an injury.

Flick named his 26-member squad on Thursday, November 10, leaving out some of the star names including experienced defender Matts Hummels.
