English championship side Coventry City have received an eviction notice to vacate the Coventry Building Society Arena with immediate effect.

According to the BBC, the club’s management were ordered to return access cards and keys before vacating the venue.

It is reported that the former Newcastle FC owners, Mike Ashley Frasers Group are behind the move, having acquired the facility a month ago.

Coventry City confirmed the reports, revealing that they were astonished by the decision taken by the new owners.

“Coventry City can confirm media reports that it received an eviction notice from Frasers Group, new owners of the Coventry Building Society Arena, on Friday afternoon.

“Following the Frasers Group acquisition of the stadium from administrators, Coventry City have been told that we must agree to a new license to play at the Arena.

“We were surprised to learn of this intention by Frasers Group, given that discussions with Coventry City prior to the completion of their purchase of the Arena led us to understand the existing terms would continue unchanged with Frasers Group as the new owners of the Arena,” a press release from the club read.

In addition, the club disclosed that they had no intention of making the situation public.

“Coventry City had envisaged being able to deal with this situation internally, but following media reports this morning.

“We will continue to keep supporters updated regarding the situation going forward and hope that we will continue to be able to welcome our fans to our home at the Coventry Building Society Arena,” the statement ended.

Coventry are currently ranked 12th in the 2022/2023 Championship standings, having amassed 29 points from 19 matches.

They are 12 points behind league leaders Burnley and nine points above bottom-placed side Huddersfield Town FC.
