Legendary football commentator Peter Drury has explained what transpired during his commentary during the Barcelona, AS Roma quarter-final match.

Speaking to Kenyan journalist Eric Njiru in Qatar on Wednesday, December 7, Drury explained the background of his commentary when Roma defeated Barcelona 3-0 to advance to the Champions League semifinals in 2018.

“I was just lucky the way things were. I was very relaxed that evening because the chances were that Barcelona was easily going to win that game and I was just there to enjoy the evening.

“I did not feel any pressure that night as there was also another big match between Liverpool and Manchester City and there was no pressure when the moment happened and it was so unexpected.

“I could not have imagined that was going to happen and I just felt liberated and let myself go. In the aftermath of that, I was amazed by the response,” Drury stated.

Drury also noted that before a game just like other commentators he did his homework where he collected facts and statistics.

He highlighted that it is important to find out everything that is likely to happen during the game and prepare for it.

The 55-year-old commentator added that prior to any match he does not think about the words he will use when a major event happens in a match.

“I never write anything that happens during the game so from the first whistle to the last you would be foolish to write anything because you would not know how it is going to happen the context might be different from how you had imagined it in advance,” Drury added.

Drury is currently in Qatar where he has been covering the FIFA World Cup matches as an official commentator.
