“My name is Eric Wahl. I live in Seattle, Washington. I am Grant Wahl’s brother. I am the reason he wore the rainbow shirt to the World Cup.
"My brother was healthy. He told me he received death threats. I do not believe my brother just died. I believe he was killed. And I beg for any help,” Eric stated on his Instagram page.
The cause of death of the journalist on duty for CBS Sport, covering the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, was yet to be ascertained.
According to CBS Sports, Wahl collapsed while in the press box of Lusail Stadium during the Argentina-Netherlands quarterfinal match.
Wahl posted on his socials on December 5 that he was experiencing some healthful strains.
"My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you.
"What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort," Wahl noted.
He had also indicated that he went for a check-up at the main media centre, where he was diagnosed with bronchitis and was given medication that did not help.
Wahl's agent told CBS News that the journalist was distressed when Argentina and the Netherlands began playing extra time. Paramedics rushed to attend to him before he was ferried to a nearby hospital.
Before his demise, Wahl was honoured on Monday, December 5, by FIFA alongside veteran journalists who had covered eight or more World Cups.
The American journalist received a mini-replica of the FIFA World Cup trophy from Brazil legend Ronaldo.
US Soccer mourned the journalist, describing him as a professional who delivered insightful and entertaining stories about the game.
